He got engaged

*a quick update.

Some of you might remember Silly Puddy. The guy who could have very well coined the term “slow fade” all on his own, leaving me reeling. To this day, I will never know why he stopped calling, or why he said he wanted to be friends, when in reality he wanted to move on with his life. I think that as a person living in an environment engrained with social etiquette, one thing people should adhere to is the “be blunt, forward, and truthful” method. There is no reason for anyone to go through an agonizing “what did I do wrong” phase just to conclude that it was really NEVER about you, really.

This past weekend, my friend Ally,* (a college roommate at whose wedding Silly Puddy and I met) had some time to catch up.

A: O, I wasn’t sure if you heard, because you’re not on facebook anymore, but [real name] is engaged.

M: I figured that was going to happen sooner or later. I responded in as normal a voice as I could muster, while my insides sank a little.

I don’t know why I felt a ping of disappointment. I haven’t seen him in over a year, and haven’t spoken to him in nearly as long, but something in me kind of fluttered, and then collapsed. Like the last leaf falling from a barren tree, just as the first snowflakes stumble through the atmosphere adding a new briskness of fresh air and an acknowledgement of a new season.
